We choose Tiny Peaces as our next fundraiser because two of our regular yoga students are members and because to date 1,038 girls have gone to school because of a scholarship program conceived and administered by just one young woman in a war-torn, poverty-ridden area of southeast Turkey.
Adalet's Scholarship Program
Adalet Budak Akbas began this journey because she was able to overcome centuries of tradition and become an educated woman in a culture that sees education as a frivolous pursuit for its women. Adalet received her degree in Social Work in 1999 and returned to her region to create change. When the women began to notice the change in her own personal life & the influence she had, they began to ask her to help their daughters becom educated as well.
Some of the main reasons girls are not encouraged to attend school include: fathers receive a larger "bride price" marrying them off right after puberty; local men believe educated women are harder to control than illiterate women; girls are needed to do chores and tend to the animals in order to help the families survive; because there is no running water near the homes, girls are needed to bring water from the well or water truck three times per day so the families have water for cooking, drinking & cleaning: the culture says women exist to cook, clean and bear children, education is an unnecessary luxury.
Adalet's scholarship program pays the families to keep their daughters in school. The average daily wage is $7 per day in this region. The families need $60 per month or $600 per year (school lasts 10 months in Turkey) to deliver clean water to the family, hire help with the chores, provide uniforms & school supplies for school and make it less likely that the girls will be married off.
Tiny Peaces has 12 girls they are funding for the 2009 school year. With your help, this dream and the lives of these girls will be changed forever. To view the photos of these girls or make a donation immediately, please view the Tiny Peaces website by clicking here: www.tinypeaces.com.
